Overview
Johannesburg is a city of two halves. It bears the traces of South Africa’s turbulent recent past, encapsulated at the sombre but essential Apartheid Museum. The city is also taking a leading role in shaping its own and the country’s future. Downtown areas such as Maboneng have undergone impressive regeneration and glittering skyscrapers tower imposingly above traditional local markets.
On the border with Botswana, two hours from Sun City or four hours from Johannesburg, Madikwe is the fifth largest game reserve in South Africa. One of its charms is how relatively unknown it is, meaning that you can enjoy a more intimate safari experience. Home to the Big Five and three hunting packs of the highly-endangered African wild dog, these former farmlands offer superb wildlife spotting in a malaria-free zone.
For family entertainment, the extravagant resort of Sun City is considered to be one of the most glamorous in southern Africa, complete with casinos, cinemas, safari experiences, restaurants, top-class golf courses and some superb hotels. Less than two hours drive from Johannesburg, here you can enjoy complimentary access to the Valley of the Waves – a fun-filled water park dominated by a large lagoon with a wave machine generating waves up to 1.8 metres every 90 seconds.
